NAN reports that former Vice-President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, Justice Idris Kutigi and Maryam Aloma Mukhtar, were also conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.

A total 25,878 students were awarded various degrees at the 15th to 20th combined convocation of
the institution on Saturday.

Ekwueme was said to be unavoidably absent as he was represented by his daughter, Mrs Chidi Onyemelukwe.

In his acceptance speech on behalf of the other recipients of honorary degrees, Tinubu thanked the institution’s authority for deeming them worthy of the award. He said that UniAbuja symbolised national unity and epitomised a collective desire to build a strong nation.
“The institution must realise its important position in the educational salvation of our youth and the rejuvenation of our nation.
“I urge a continuous commitment to quality and excellence.
“The university, numbered among the new generation universities, must strive in the tradition of groundbreaking scholarship and research.
“In spite of the challenges of infrastructure and funding, the university must not compromise its academic standard,” he said.
The highlight of the event was the investiture of Alhaji Shehu Idris, the Emir of Zazzau, as the Chancellor of the institution.

At the event, Ambode said all the knowledge and discipline impacted in him during his secondary school days in the college contributed largely to who he is today, just as he urged his old school mates to come together and ensure the vision of the school was kept alive.

The governor said:

“Indeed, my becoming a governor can be attributed to what I gained and learnt from this school. We must come together, all of us to ensure that the vision of the establishment of the school must not die.

So it is a great honour to all of us to return here after decades and celebrate this 50th anniversary. We are benefiting from the vision planted years ago.

I want to a$$ure the principal that we are going to bring back the good old days of this school. I wish all the students well and pray that you all be better and more successful than all of us here today.

I like to say a big welcome to seniors and juniors. One great thing about this school is that no matter what you become in life your senior remains your senior.”

An uncommon illness with strong symptoms of malaria is currently on the soutbreak in the Obafemi Awolowo university with differing accounts of a possible cause for it.

Obafemi-Awolowo-University-August-2014

Students of one of Nigeria’s oldest universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, have expressed concern about increased cases of illness among students.A visit to the institution’s largest student hostel, Awolowo Hall, showed that many of the rooms had at least one student who had fallen ill.
One of the rooms, which has 8 occupants, had five of them already falling ill this past week.An average of five students stay in a room in the hostel officially although the figure is often up to a dozen due to the shortage of student accommodation. The increased cases of illness has been attributed to the ‘harsh’ weather conditions while some students have attributed it to poor sanitary conditions of the hostels.

Some students also alleged that they were given expired drugs at the institutions health centre when they visited after they fell ill.

One of the students who just recovered from his illness, Adebayo Benjamin, said, “I was feeling dizzy, vomited , had high temperature and headache , I have not felt this way before.”

Another student, Abiodun of Management and Accounting Department, said his illness prevented him from preparing for the university’s examination which begins early March.

A visit to the health centre of the institution also showed that an average of three doctors attended to the scores of students who thronged the hospital. Some of the symptoms complained of by students include high temperature, vomiting, dizziness, stomach ache and headache.

One of the doctors on duty attributed the increased illness to the harsh weather and lack of rest by students. Other health workers, who confirmed the increase in number of students appearing at the centre, however. said the situations in the hostel may have made the conditions worse. The hospital’s Chief Medical Director was not on seat and could not be reached on phone.

Already, the university’s a$$ociation of Campus Journalists, ACJ, has blamed the hostel conditions for the illness.

“The drainages at the back of our hostels have not been cleaned for about one month thereby breeding mosquitoes that have spread the strange virus,” Omole Isaac, the ACJ spokesperson said in a statement. “Our advise to students is to keep their rooms clean as we have not witnessed this kind of development before.”

Some of the students, however, blamed their colleagues for the poor sanitary conditions of the hostels.

“The way hostel facilities are used by students can be annoying, little precautions need be taken although this strange fever is not controllable,” a student, Samuel Olatunde, said,

Following the Supreme courts verdict on Reverend King, an igbo socio-cultural group has pleaded with the federal government to spare the life of the ‘man of God

Reverend-King-1-300x182-300x182

Ndigbo Cultural Society of Nigeria (NCSN) has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria not to make haste in carrying out the death sentence pa$$ed on Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, the General Overseer of Christian Praying a$$embly, by the Supreme Court on Friday.
Leader of the group, Chief Udo Udeogaranya, made the appeal after the Supreme Court threw out Rev King’s appeal against the death sentence pa$$ed on him in 2007 by a Lagos High Court presided over by Justice Joseph Oyewole.According to Udeogaranya, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government should “commute the sentence and grant him pardon as Nigeria stands to gain nothing by shedding blood.“This plea is premised on the ground that many Nigerians still hold Rev. Ezeugo as their spiritual leader even in various prisons and that the initial trial in Lagos as purportedly put forward by his lawyer Mr. Olalekan Ojo and published by national dailies was a miscarriage of justice in which the lawyer made certain points that demanded a second thought.

“Ojo argued that his client did not commit the crime and was not at the scene of the incident. He insisted that the deceased, Ann Uzoh, had in two statements she made after the incident and before her death, stated that she got burnt in a generator accident and that the cleric was not responsible for her injuries.

“Ojo said the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, had tendered statements which stated that Ezeugo was not responsible for the burns that led to Uzoh’s death. He alleged that the trial Judge refused to admit in evidence, the statements he said exonerated Ezeugo of the crime.

“The lawyer further contended had those ‘vital exhibits’ been admitted rather than expunged by the trial judge, they would have operated to cast serious doubt on the case of the prosecution. He maintained that Justice Oyewole’s refusal to admit the exhibits in evidence ‘occasioned a great miscarriage of justice’ against his client.”

The Nigerian Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has announced the banning of foreign beans into the country except those screened by the Agency.

The Acting Director General of the Agency, Mrs. Yetunde Oni who disclosed this at the awareness/Sensitization Workshop on Safe and Responsible use of Regulated Agricultural inputs for Stakeholders in the North Central Zone in Minna Wednesday emphasized that only beans screened by the Agency will be allowed into the country in order to be sure of their safety.

According to her “We must recall that these banned beans produce that have been banned in the European Union (EU) are those ones that never pa$$ed through NAFDAC. All the beans that pa$$ed through NAFDAC and issued EU certification to, of food and health impart on Nigerians do not get rejected.
The ones that have been banned are those ones that never pa$$ed through NAFDAC”. She however called on all relevant Agencies to be awake to their responsibilities by working hand in hand with the Agency to actuaize this objective.

“It is not entirely the function of NAFDAC, but the primary a$$ignment of the Quarantine which is under the Ministry of Agriculture to look into beans because it is an Agricultural produce”, she had used.

On whose purview the produce is regulated, she said ‎”beans is an agricultural produce, as opposed to a semi or fully processed regulated product under the purview of NAFDAC and such products are food, drugs, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water and detergents. These are the ones that are under our purview”.

“But because we have seen that the beans is a raw material into a final product that is regulated by NAFDAC, we are now talking of collaboration with one another so that all relevant stakeholders will join hands towards a common goal of ensuring that only good quality regulated products are available for consumption, for sales, distribution, advertisement, information and importation into the country.‎”
